A PCIe video card may not work when an integrated onboard video card is already present in Windows 2000 (923338)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

A Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) video card may not work when an integrated onboard video card is already present on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000. For example, consider the following scenario:
  • A Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer has an integrated onboard video card.
  • You add a second video card by using the PCIe slot.
  • The Plug and Play feature automatically installs the driver for the PCIe video card.
  • You restart the computer.
In this scenario, the PCIe video card does not work. Additionally, a yellow exclamation mark appears next to the video card in Device Manager.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods to reinstall the driver for the video card.

Method 1: Download and install the latest driver

Download and install the latest driver for the video card. To obtain the driver, contact the manufacturer.

Method 2: Install the driver by using the disc that came with the video card

Insert the disc that came with the video card, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen. If the instructions do not appear, use the Add Hardware Wizard to reinstall the driver. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type hdwwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Click Next, click Yes, I have already connected the hardware, and then click Next again.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the list, click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next.
  4. Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), and then click Next.
  5. In the Common hardware types list, click Display adapters, and then click Next.
  6. Click Have Disk.
  7. In the Install From Disk dialog box, click Browse, and then open the folder that contains the .inf file from the PCIe video card's driver package. Typically, the .inf file is in a folder whose path resembles the following: Drive_letter:\drivers\Windows XP
  8. Click the .inf file, click Open, and then click OK.
  9. If you receive the following message, click Continue Anyway: The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. (Tell me why this testing is important.)

    Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the software vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing.
  10. Finish the remaining steps in the wizard, and then restart the computer.
If you cannot follow these steps to reinstall the driver, contact the manufacturer of the video card for more information about how to reinstall the driver.
