Remote reporting points, management points, and server locator points no longer function after you upgrade to Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (923109)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 SP2

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site server to SMS 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), remote reporting points, management points, and server locator points no longer function.

When you run a report, you receive the following error message in Microsoft Internet Explorer. This error message indicates that a problem exists with the SMS reporting point:
Number=-2147467259 Description=[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Source=Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server NativeError=17
The following error message is logged in the MP_GetAuth.log file. This error message indicates that a problem exists with the management point:
CMPDBConnection::Init(): IDBInitialize::Initialize() failed with 0x80004005
This behavior only occurs if you change the site security from standard security to advanced security when you upgrade to SMS 2003 SP2.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because SMS 2003 is still trying to use the SMS_SQL_RX_site code account from standard security to access the SMS database. Instead, SMS 2003 should use the local system account.
