The PS/2 mouse may not work after you upgrade the operating system to Windows XP (922378)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade the operating system to Microsoft Windows XP, the PS/2 mouse may not work when Windows is running in normal mode. The mouse works when Windows is running in safe mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start the computer in safe mode. To start the computer in safe mode, follow these steps:
    1. Restart the computer.

      Note If the computer is configured to use multiple operating systems, use the arrow keys to select the operating system that you want, and then press ENTER.

    2. Press F8 when you see the Startup menu.
    3. Use the arrow keys to select a Safe mode option, and then press ENTER.

      Note The NUM LOCK functionality must be turned off for the arrow keys to work on the numeric keypad.

  2. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
  3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  4. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  5. Locate and then click PS/2 Compatible Mouse.

    Note Substitute PS/2 Compatible Mouse with the PS/2 compatible mouse device that is listed.

  6. On the Action menu, click Properties.
  7. In the Properties dialog box for the device, click the Advanced Settings tab.
  8. Click to clear the Fast Initialization check box, and then click OK.
  9. Restart the computer in normal mode.
