The printer driver cannot be matched correctly when you install a printer on a computer that is running Host Integration Server (921497)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004
  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you install a printer on a computer that is running Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 or Host Integration Server 2004, the printer driver cannot be matched correctly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem and to help create a stable printing environment for computers that are running Host Integration Server, use the Inbox Hewlett-Packard (HP) drivers. If the correct coordinating driver is unavailable, use the HP LaserJet 4 driver or the HP LaserJet 5si driver. The HPLaserJet 4 driver and the HP LaserJet 5si driver are two basic HP drivers. These two drivers are suited for the printing needs of computers that are running Host Integration Server. To download these two drivers, visit the following HP Web site:Note We recommend that you use only the Microsoft Certified drivers for a stable printing environment in Host Integration Server, instead of the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) HP drivers.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

OEM drivers

Third-party vendors submit drivers to Microsoft and certify to Microsoft that these drivers meet Microsoft criteria. When the third-party drivers are submitted, the drivers are evaluated by using the Winqual process. If the third-party drivers are approved throughout an outlined time parameter, the third-party drivers are added to the Ntprint.inf file and released with the next version of the Microsoft operating system. If the third-party drivers are not received before the current product release, the third-party drivers are held and tested for the next version of the operating system.

For more information about Winqual, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Inbox drivers

Inbox drivers are drivers that have been submitted and have successfully completed the Winqual process. These drivers are accepted and added to the Ntprint.inf file. The default location of the Ntprint.inf file is %windir%\inf\ntprint.inf.

Windows Update driver list

On the Install Printer Software page of the Add Printer Wizard in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, in Windows 2000, and in Windows XP, there is a Windows Update button. When you click Windows Update, the list of drivers is updated to include third-party certified drivers. These drivers are third-party certified drivers that have been submitted to Microsoft. However, these drivers have not passed the Winqual process. They are awaiting testing and may be added to the Ntprint.inf file and released with the next version of the operating system. Until these drivers are in the Ntprint.inf file, they are considered OEM drivers and will be reported as OEM drivers in the Microsoft Product Support Reporting tool (MPSRPTS).
