Prevent saved games from becoming corrupted for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

You cannot repair saved games that are corrupted. If you try to load a saved game but you cannot load the game because the saved game file is corrupted, load a different saved game from an earlier point in the game.

To help prevent future saved games from being corrupted, follow these steps:
  1. Save your game progress to different save game slots frequently. When you use this method, you will lose little game progress if one save game file becomes corrupted, because you can use another recently saved game.

Note Using cheats can affect saved games.
  2. Copy saved games to a memory card to maintain a backup in case the Xbox 360 Hard Drive fails.
  3. Clear the game cache.

Note Oblivion frequently uses the hard drive to cache, or copy and reuse game data. Caching helps optimize the loading of game data. However, occasionally the cached data may become fragmented. Fragmented cache can cause menus, sounds, objects, and levels to load more slowly. To clear the game cache, reset the Xbox 360 console. To do this, hold the A button as the game loads.

Note If you hold down any button as Oblivion loads, the hard drive cache is cleared and a new cache is created. When the video of the Bethesda Softworks logo appears, the game is already loaded. You must clear the cache before this video appears. Clearing the cache does not affect the game. You will not lose any data that you have saved.
  4. Delete any saved files or saved games from the hard drive that you no longer use.
