SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Speech Server 2004 on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based domain controller, you receive an error message depending on the Speech Server component that you are trying to install.
  • In Speech Server 2004 R2, you see a red X next to the operating system requirement. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Installation of Microsoft Speech Server 2004 R2 cannot continue because it is either not supported on your operating system or because the installed Service Pack is not supported. Please refer to the system requirements listed in the Readme.
  • In Speech Application SDK (SASDK), you receive the following error message:
The following items are required for installation of Microsoft® Speech Application SDK 1.0. We recommend you install the items in the order listed. Minimum Operating System must be one of the following:
    - Microsoft Windows® 2000, Service Pack 4
    - Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1
    - Microsoft Windows ServerT 2003

Internet Information Services (must be installed prior to installing Microsoft .NET Framework)

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, Service Pack 1

    Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Note: If using Windows Server 2003, you must also install ASP.NET 1.1 Microsoft Enterprise Instrumentation framework

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a Windows Server 2003-based domain controller and a computer that is not a Windows Server 2003-based domain controller return different operating system versions to Speech Server 2004.

Note Installing Speech Server 2004 on a Windows Server 2003-based domain controller is not supported, whether you install Active Directory before or after you install Speech Server 2004.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem:
  1. Make sure that the Windows Server 2003 computer is not configured as a domain controller.
  2. Install Speech Server 2004.
  3. At the command prompt, run the following command to remove Active Directory from the domain controller:

    dcpromo /demote

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
