FIX: You may receive an error message when you try to edit some Windows Media files by using the Windows Media File Editor or a media editing application that is based on the Windows Media Format SDK (921108)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You try to edit some Microsoft Windows Media files by using one of the following tools:
  • The Windows Media File Editor
  • A media editing application that is based on the Windows Media Format SDK
In this scenario, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Error message 1

"Failed to Create File"

Error message 2

0x8000FFFF - Catastrophic Failure
This issue typically occurs on files that have higher bitrate streams.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the packet times in the Windows Media content are calculated incorrectly. This behavior causes a failure, and you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing.
