Error message when you connect a keyboard or an external number pad to a Windows XP-based computer: "Kbdhid.sys file missing" (921046)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect a keyboard or an external number pad to a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Kbdhid.sys file missing

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Search.
  2. In the left pane, click All files and folders.
  3. In the All or part of the file name box, type kbdhid.sys, click More advanced options, and then click to select the Search hidden files and folders check box.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
  5. In the Advanced settings list, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box.
  6. Click Yes, click Apply, and then click OK.
  7. Click Search. In the list of found files in the right pane, note the path of the Kbdhid.sys file.
  8. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
  9. In the Advanced settings list, click Do not show hidden files and folders, and then click to select the Hide protected operating system files check box.
  10. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  11. Disconnect and then reconnect the keyboard or the number pad. When you are prompted, point to the path of the Kbdhid.sys file that you noted in step 7.
