An Exchange Server 2003 SP2 server becomes unresponsive after you delete a mailbox on which you registered the Auto Accept Agent event sink (920861)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You install the Auto Accept Agent on a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2). You register the Auto Accept Agent event sink on one or more mailboxes. Later, you delete one or more mailboxes on which you registered the Auto Accept Agent event sink. In this scenario, you experience the following symptoms:
  • The Exchange server becomes unresponsive.
  • The Application log is filled with event ID 4097 events.
  • Microsoft Office Outlook users cannot perform any tasks.
  • CPU usage remains at 100 percent.

Note If you stop the Auto Accept Agent service, CPU usage is reduced immediately.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you delete a mailbox before you delete the Auto Accept Agent event sink for the mailbox. In this situation, the mailbox is deleted. However, the mailbox is still registered in the StoreEvents folder. Therefore, an orphaned entry for the deleted mailbox is created in the System mailbox.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Editor (MFCMapi) to delete the orphaned entry from the System mailbox. Then, restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

Use MFCMapi to delete the orphaned entry

To use MFCMapi to delete the orphaned entry, follow these steps:
  1. Download the MfcMapi.exe file. Then, copy the MfcMapi.exe file to the Exchange server.

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

  2. Start MFCMapi, and then click OK.
  3. On the Session menu, click Logon and Display Store Table.
  4. Click to select the Microsoft Exchange Server check box, and then click Next.
  5. In the Microsoft Exchange server box, type the name of the Exchange server. In the Mailbox box, type Administrator, and then click Next.

Note To log on, you must use an account that has Exchange Full Administrator permissions.
  6. Click No, and then click Next.
  7. Click the Mailbox - Administrator entry.
  8. On the MDB menu, click Get mailbox table.
  9. In the Server name box, type the name of the Exchange server, and then click OK.
  10. In the upper pane, double-click the SystemMailbox{GUID} entry.
  11. Expand Root Container, expand Top of Information Store, and then expand StoreEvents.
  12. Double-click internal. A new window opens. The GUIDs of all mailboxes that are registered on the Auto Accept Agent are displayed in the upper pane.
  13. In the upper pane, select each entry. Do this one at a time.
  14. In the lower pane, locate the six PTSTRING8 entries for the deleted mailbox.
  15. Identify the PTSTRING8 entry that contains the name of the deleted mailbox.

Note There are six PTSTRING8 entries for each mailbox entry. One of these entries identifies the mailbox. This entry resembles the following:

    file://./backofficestorage/Your_Domain_Name//MBX/Mailbox_Name/Inbox

Note Mailbox_Name refers to the mailbox that the GUID entry represents. The GUID entry is in the upper pane.
  16. When you find a PTSTRING8 entry that contains the name of the deleted mailbox, right-click the corresponding GUID entry in the upper pane, and then click Delete Message.
  17. Similarly, delete all other orphaned GUID entries that represent deleted mailboxes.

Restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service

After you delete the orphaned entries, you must restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Right-click Microsoft Exchange Information Store Service, and then click Restart.
  3. Exit the Services snap-in.
