Error message when you try to play FM radio in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005: "Before you use FM Radio, the radio tuner must be set up" (920766)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

When you try to play FM radio in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
  • When you select any of the options on the FM RADIO page, nothing happens.
  • When you click Start FM on the FM RADIO page, you receive the following error message:
    SET UP FM RADIO

Before you use FM Radio, the radio tuner must be set up. To set up the radio tuner, you must go through TV Tuner setup.
When you click OK, the Set Up TV Signal Wizard runs. However, after you complete the wizard, you receive the same error message when you click Start FM on the FM RADIO page.

CAUSE

This problem only occurs if Media Center is used together with a hybrid TV tuner that has the following characteristics:
  • The tuner supports both Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting Services (DVB-T) and PAL.
  • The tuner includes an FM radio tuner.
This problem may occur if Media Center incorrectly lists the Radio option on the menu. When Media Center is configured to receive a DVB-T signal in the Set Up TV Signal Wizard, the Radio option should not be listed on the Media Center main menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Media Center does not support the hybrid functionality of a hybrid TV tuner card. Media Center cannot build multiple capture graphs for the tuner card. When you run the Set Up TV Signal Wizard, Media Center either builds an analog (PAL) capture graph or a digital (DVB-T) capture graph. When a digital capture graph is built, the Radio option should not be available from the Media Center menu because FM radio is an analog signal. However, if Media Center is configured to receive a PAL TV signal and the TV tuner has a FM radio tuner, the Radio option will be available and will work in Media Center.
