SYMPTOMS

You cannot install Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), and you may find the following message in the WSUSCA log files:Starting custom action

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) is installed on the computer.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Remove MSDE from the computer. For more information about how to remove MSDE, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. Delete the following registry subkeys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSSQLServer

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSSQLServerADHelper

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SQLAgent$<INSTANCENAME>

    To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

    3. Right-click Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Delete.
    4. Click Yes to confirm.
    5. Repeat step a through step d to delete the other registry subkeys that are listed in step 2.
  3. Exit Registry Editor.
You can now successfully install WSUS.
