Windows XP-based clients may obtain automatic updates from the Windows Update site instead of from a Windows Server Update Services server (920652)

Microsoft Windows XP-based clients may obtain automatic updates from the Microsoft Windows Update site instead of from the Microsoft Windows Server Update Services server. CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following registry entries are corrupted or are not valid:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\SusServerVersion
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\ConfigVer
The registry entries may become corrupted if Microsoft Software Update Services is upgraded to Microsoft Windows Server Update Services on the client.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To solve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate

  3. Modify the existing registry entries, or add new registry entries, to match the entries in the following table.

  4. On the File menu, click Exit.
  5. Restart the computer.
