Error message when you try to install Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 on a computer that is running Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs: "Dasetup.exe - Application Error - The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)" (920316)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Dasetup.exe - Application Error - The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if MDAC 2.8 is set to HARDBLOCK in the Compatibility Administrator.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Download and install version 4.1 of the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 4.1, point to Tools, and then click Compatibility Administrator.
  3. In the left pane, expand Applications.
  4. Locate and then click MDAC 2.8 RTM.
  5. In the upper-right pane, right-click dasetup.exe, and then click Disable Entry.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit.
