"Show icons for networked UPnP devices" and "Hide icons for networked UPnP devices" functionality in Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs does not work as expected (920306)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You click Hide icons for networked UPnP devices in My Network Places on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs.
  • You click Yes in the dialog box that displays the following message:You have chosen to hide UPnP device icons. This will also close the Windows Firewall ports so that the UPnP device software can no longer discover networked UPnP devices.

    Do you want to continue?
In this scenario, you find that the UPnP port is still open.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps to show or to hide icons for networked UPnP devices:

To show icons for networked UPnP devices

Use an account that has administrative credentials to log on to the computer, and then do the following:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 upnpui.dll.
  3. In the Regsvr32 dialog box, click OK.

To hide icons for networked UPnP devices

Use an account that has administrative credentials to log on to the computer, and then do the following:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 /u upnpui.dll.
  3. In the Regsvr32 dialog box, click OK.
