INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to move or to copy your custom note flags to another computer in Microsoft Office OneNote 2003.

MORE INFORMATION

OneNote 2003 lets you mark notes with note flags so that you can easily come back to information that you want to act on, to remember, to study, or to send.

OneNote 2003 includes five predefined note flags. You can customize all available note flags by creating your own labels for the flags and by selecting icons and colors.

When you customize note flags, the information is stored in the Preferences.dat file. Additionally, the Preferences.dat file stores information for the following items:
  • The Most Recently Used (MRU) list of the document
  • The list format for bullets and numbering
  • The MRU list of the Move Section To dialog box
  • The definitions for the note flags
  • Pen styles
  • The stationery MRU list
Note When you move the Preferences.dat file to another computer, these items are also moved.

By default, the Preferences.dat file is stored in the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\User ID\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote

To move or to copy your custom note flags to another computer, follow these steps:
  1. On the source computer, locate the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\User ID\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote

  2. Copy or move the Preferences.dat file to a portable storage device.

Note Portable storage devices include floppy disks, portable hard disks, flash memories, and so on.
  3. On the second computer, copy the Preferences.dat file from the portable storage device to the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\User ID\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote

Note You can also use a network to move custom note flags if the network is available between the two computers.
