Error Occurs while Creating Icons at End of Setup (92652)

SUMMARY

If you receive one of the following messages at the end of the Microsoft Works for Windows setup as it attempts to create icons in the Windows Program Manager, the Works for Windows program may not be properly decompressed or the Windows help engine may be corrupt:

  • General Protection Fault (GP Fault) - Windows 3.1 -or-

  • Recoverable Application Error (RAE) - Windows 3.1 -or-

  • Unrecoverable Application Error (UAE) - Windows 3.0

To determine the cause of the error, look at the Solution Series group:

  1. If the Solution Series group was created but no icons appear within it, the MSWORKS.EXE file may have been expanded incorrectly. To correct this, reboot the computer with a minimum system configuration and reinstall Works for Windows.

  2. If the Microsoft Works icon appears but the Solution Series Info (question mark) icon does not, the WINHELP.EXE file may be corrupt. Although this does not cause problems with the normal operation of Works, you may experience problems when you access on-line help in Windows applications. To correct this problem, do the following:

    1. Delete WINHELP.EXE from the Windows directory.
    2. Re-expand the file using the EXPAND.EXE utility included with Windows. In Windows 3.1, the compressed version of the Help file is WINHELP.EX_. In Windows 3.0, the compressed version is WINHELP.EXE. The following is an example of this command for Windows 3.1:

      expand a:\winhelp.ex_ <Windows path>\winhelp.exe
