Error message when you try to synchronize a Windows Mobile 5.0-based device in Exchange Server 2003: "0x85010004" (919864)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4).
  • In Exchange System Manager, you enable the Enforce password on device option. This option is in the Device Security Settings dialog box under Mobile Device Properties.
You try to synchronize a device that is running Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 software for Pocket PCs and that has the Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 installed. When you do this, you receive the following error message:
0x85010004
Additionally, the device cannot be synchronized.

You may also receive the following error messages on the Windows Mobile-based device:
Your Account does not have permissions to sync with your current settings. Contact your Microsoft Exchange administrator.
Error code: HTTP_403

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Prerequisites

You must have Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 installed to apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

  • World Wide Publishing Service
  • Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP)
  • Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine
  • IIS Admin Service
