SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2, you cannot use Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) to extract binary attributes that are stored in the Active Directory directory service. For example, you cannot access a GUID. Therefore, you cannot pass binary Active Directory attributes to an outgoing Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) token.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because ADFS incorrectly encodes the data in binary Active Directory attributes by using the ToString() function when the data should be base-64 encoded.
