SUMMARYThis article describes how to enable additional features in the account register, in bills, in budgets, and in reports in Microsoft Money. Some features may appear to be missing if you are using the Essential level of service in these areas. The Advanced level of service provides additional features. SYMPTOMSWhen you use one of the Microsoft Money products listed in the "Applies To" section, some features may be missing.CAUSEThis behavior occurs when you have the Essentials level of features enabled. The following areas of Money have both Essentials and Advanced level of features: - Account Register
- Bills
- Budget
- Reports
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this behavior, change the area setting from Essentials to Advanced.MORE INFORMATIONAccount RegistersThe Essential Account Register gives you quick and easy access to everything that you want to know about your current account balances and transactions, without tedious data entry.
Use the Essential Account Register for accounts that you expect to update online, instead of entering updated transactions one by one. The Advanced Account Register is designed for people who enjoy updating and analyzing their finances, and who are willing to invest extra work in tracking the precise details of their financial situation. The detailed information that is tracked in the Advanced Account Register is typically used for very thorough budgeting, long-term planning, and tax analysis.
The easiest way to keep the Advanced Account Register up to date is to use online updates from your bank or brokerage firm. Money will automatically categorize the transactions if it recognizes the payee. Then, you can add the detailed information that you want. You can also update your accounts by typing in transactions. Essential | Advanced | Your most important information is easy to find, without extra details or clutter. You can quickly see how much you have in your account, and which transactions have cleared. | Divide categories into smaller units so that you can track spending at very detailed levels and aggregate the details. An example is breaking out car expenses into gasoline, maintenance, and parking. | Rely on Money to do the work for you. Online updates give you the most recent information from your bank or brokerage firm without typing. | Add detailed information about transactions that have not cleared your bank. | You can closely watch your spending. Money automatically categorizes your transactions into broad spending areas and adjusts those categories based on what you have chosen in the past. You can also add or change categories. | Support for offline accounts. Type all transactions instead of receiving online updates. You can use online updates in the Advanced Register, but you do not have to. | Keep track of transactions that have not cleared your bank. If you want to see how a large check will affect your bank balance, you can add it to your account register. Money shows you the current balance that your bank is reporting, and an adjusted balance that takes your check into account. | Add notes to each transaction so that you can track additional information that is not covered in the rest of the transaction. | | Split a single purchase or deposit amount into amounts for different spending categories. | | Compare the transactions that you have entered in Money with those that have cleared your bank. | | Track all your purchases, sales, capital gains distributions, dividend payments, and more. |

Advanced Bills offers all the basic features of Essential Bills, plus additional features that give you more detailed control over your bills, bill tracking, and bill payment. Additionally, you can submit the bills at the same time, instead of submitting them individually. | Add recurring deposits, transfers, paychecks, and investments. You are not limited to tracking just the money you pay out. | Money keeps track of every bill that you schedule. Therefore, you can see immediately when bills are due and how they affect your account balance. Sometimes you have to change just one bill in a series. With Advanced Bills, you can change the payment amount for one bill at a time. | Work directly from the bill calendar. The graphical calendar view makes it easy to work with your bills and deposits for a whole month. | Set up automated transfers between any accounts that you track in Money. | Set up recurring automatic payments (Apays). Print multiple checks at the same time, and then use them just as you would personal checks that you purchased from your bank. | View a history of electronic and manual payments.
