SYMPTOMS

After you install Update Rollup 1 on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)-based computer that is using a dual-core processor or a hyper-threading processor, the CPU temperature increases abnormally.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\HAL

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New , and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type 14140000FFFFFFFF, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click 14140000FFFFFFFF, and then click Modify.
  6. Type 00000010 in the Value data box, click Hexadecimal, and then click OK.
