Fixes a problem where you cannot use Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects after you install security update MS06-014 on a Windows 98-based computer or on a windows Millennium Edition-based computer. (919510)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8

Bug #: 679 (SQL Hotfix)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You install the original release version of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 on a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer or on a Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition-based computer. You install security update MS06-014 from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site. In this scenario, you cannot use Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) in your application. For example, you receive the following error message when you try to create an ADODB.RecordSet object:
Error: ActiveX component can't create object: 'adodb.recordset'
Code: 800A01AD

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Msdart.dll file that is contained in the MS06-014 security update package depends on a function in the Kernel32.dll file. However, the function that is required by the Msdart.dll file is not available in the version of the Kernel32.dll file in Windows 98 or in Windows Millennium Edition.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, either install MDAC 2.8 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain a hotfix.

Service pack information

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for MDAC 2.8. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note If you install MDAC 2.8 SP1 to resolve this problem, you must reinstall the MDAC 2.8 security update for the new MDAC 2.8 SP1 installation. To do this, visit the Windows Update Web site. Windows Update scans the computer and detects the un-updated version of MDAC 2.8. Then, review and install the security update.
