How to move a company database file from one computer to another computer in Microsoft Small Business Accounting (919451)

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to move a Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting (SBA) 2006 company database file from one computer to another computer.

To move a company database file from one computer to another computer, follow these steps.

Note You must have administrator access to attach or to detach a company database file.
  1. Install Small Business Accounting on the computer to which you want to move the company database file.
  2. Detach the company database file from the computer that currently has the company database:
    1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Small Business Accounting, and then click Data Tools.
    2. In the Small Business Accounting Data Tools dialog box, click the Advanced Tools tab.
    3. Click Detach.
    4. In the Detach a Database dialog box, select the company database file that you want to detach.

      Note You cannot detach the company database file if the company database file is currently open.
    5. Click Detach.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Click Close to close the Detach a Database dialog box.
    8. Click Close to close the Small Business Accounting Data Tools dialog box.
  3. Delete the .sbc file from the computer that has the company database file. By default, the .sbc file is located in the following directory:

    C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\Small Business Accounting\Companies

    Note The UserName placeholder is a placeholder for the actual user name.
  4. Copy the .sbd files and the .sbl files to the other computer. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the computer that has the detached database files, open the following folder:

      C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ\Data

    2. If the computers are networked, copy the .sbd files and the .sbl files to the other computer. If the computers are not networked, copy the files to a disk.
    3. Save the .sbd files and the .sbl files on the other computer in the following folder:

      C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ\Data

  5. Attach the company database file on the computer to which you saved the .sbd files and the .sbl files, and then create a new .sbc file. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Small Business Accounting, and then click Data Tools.
    2. In the Small Business Accounting Data Tools dialog box, click the Advanced Tools tab.
    3. Click Attach.
    4. In the Attach a Database dialog box, click Browse, locate the company database file that you want to attach, and then click Open.

      Notes
      • By default, the data file is located in the following directory:

        C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQLServer\MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ\Data

      • The company database file is an .sbd file.
    5. In the Database name field, type a name for the new company database (.sbc) file.
    6. Click Attach.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Click Close to close the Small Business Accounting Data Tools dialog box.
