FIX: You may receive an error message when you install the cumulative hotfix package (build 2153) for SQL Server 2005 (919224)

SYMPTOMS

When you install the cumulative hotfix package (build 2153) for Microsoft SQL Server 2005, you must install the component packages in the correct order. If you do not install the component packages in the correct order, you may receive an error message after the installation. Alternatively, you may be in an undefined state.

For example, you may receive the following error message:
Connect to SSIS Service on machine "computername" failed: Error loading type library/DLL.
You may receive this error message if you install the SQL Server 2005 Tools package before you install the SQL Server 2005 Integration Services package. When you do this, a registry key is deleted. Therefore, the Integration Services service is unable to start.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem or to avoid this problem, install the component packages in the following correct order:
  • SQL Server 2005
  • SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services
  • SQL Server 2005 Integration Services
  • SQL Server 2005 Notification Services
  • SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services
  • SQL Server 2005 Tools
Note Install all the component packages, even if you do not run a particular component.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

You can use the Application log in Event Viewer to determine the actual order that the component packages were installed. If the actual order differs from the order of the following events, reinstall the component packages in the correct order:
  • Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - Update 'Hotfix 2153 for SQL Server Database Services 2005 (KB918222)' installed successfully.
  • Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services - Update 'Hotfix 2153 for SQL Server Analysis Services 2005 (KB918222)' installed successfully.
  • Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services - Update 'Hotfix 2153 for SQL Server Integration Services 2005 (KB918222)' installed successfully.
  • Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Notification Services - Update 'Hotfix 2153 for SQL Server Notification Services 2005 (KB918222)' installed successfully.
  • Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services - Update 'Hotfix 2153 for SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 (KB918222)' installed successfully.
  • Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools - Update 'Hotfix 2153 for SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components 2005 (KB918222)' installed successfully.
