You experience several symptoms in a virtual machine that is running in Virtual PC 7 for Mac (919057)

SYMPTOMS

You may experience one or more of the following symptoms in a virtual machine that is running in Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 7:
  • Icons, buttons, and other objects that you ordinarily click may appear as black boxes or are shaded pink.
  • You may experience problems with the audio in the guest operating system. For example, there may be high pitched sounds.
  • The performance of the guest operating system is poor.

CAUSE

These problems may occur with certain configurations of hardware and software that use MultiMedia EXtensions (MMX).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, toggle the MMX setting.

Before you follow these steps, verify that your virtual machine is shut down. To do this, start Virtual PC for Mac Version 7. If the entry for the virtual machine in the Virtual PC List window displays Not Running, the machine is shut down. If the entry displays Saved, follow these steps:
  1. Click the entry for the virtual machine in the Virtual PC List window, and then click Start Up.

    Note If the Virtual PC List window does not appear, click Virtual PC List on the Window menu.
  2. When the Microsoft Windows session is restored, click Shut Down on the PC menu.
  3. Click Shut Down Windows, and then click Shut Down.
To toggle the MMX setting, follow these steps:
  1. In the Virtual PC List window, click the virtual machine where you want to toggle the MMX setting.
  2. On the AppleScript menu, point to Virtual PC Scripts, point to Troubleshooting, and then click Toggle MMX Setting.
  3. Click Run, click Continue, click Disable, and then click Done.
  4. Close the Toggle MMX Setting.scpt dialog box.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, the AppleScript menu does not appear in the Apple Menu bar. To turn on the AppleScript menu, follow these steps:
  1. Start Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.
  2. On the Virtual PC menu, click Preferences.
  3. In the Virtual PC Preferences window, click Script Menu, click Install Script Menu, and then click Done.
