SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You check the spelling of text that is in an e-mail message in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003. You use either the Dutch or Spanish dictionary to check the spelling of the text. In this scenario, the spelling of the text is not checked. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Speller does not support this language.
Note This issue does not occur when you use Microsoft Office Word 2003 as your e-mail editor in Outlook 2003.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:
  • You have the Microsoft Office 2003 Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) for several languages installed.
  • The primary MUI and custom dictionary that you use is not Dutch or Spanish. For example, the primary MUI and dictionary that you use is French.
  • The text of the e-mail message is typed when your primary MUI and custom dictionary is selected.
  • To check the spelling of text in the e-mail message, you select either the Dutch or the Spanish dictionary.

How to obtain the hotfix

How to enable the hotfix

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To enable this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Exit all Office 2003 programs.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click to select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

  4. After you select the subkey that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type ListDefaultDictForAllLanFirst, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click ListDefaultDictForAllLanFirst, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.
  9. Start Word 2003.
  10. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  11. Click the Spelling & Grammar tab.
  12. Click Custom Dictionaries.
  13. Click to clear all the custom dictionaries check boxes that are listed under Dictionary list, and then click OK.
  14. Click Custom Dictionaries.
  15. Click to select the custom dictionaries you want to use, and then click OK.
  16. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
  17. Exit Word 2003.
