You cannot connect to the Internet from a virtual machine in Virtual PC for Mac (918909)

SYMPTOMS

You cannot use Microsoft Internet Explorer to connect to the Internet from a guest operating system in Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac. When you try to connect to the Internet from a guest operating system, you receive the following error message:
Page Cannot Be Displayed
This problem occurs even though you have correctly configured the network settings for the guest operating system.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the ISP does not assign the DNS server addresses for the guest operating system.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, assign the DNS server addresses manually. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Contact the ISP to obtain the appropriate DNS server addresses. Alternatively, visit the following third-party Web site for a partial listing of DNS server addresses for specific ISPs: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information.
  2. Start the guest operating system.
  3. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
  4. Press and hold down the CTRL key while you click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
  5. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  6. Click Use the following DNS Addresses.
  7. Type the DNS server addresses in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes, and then click OK two times.
