The "Inclusion list for low file types" policy setting in Attachment Manager is not applied correctly for PowerPoint file attachments on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer (918895)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer, you add the .ppt file name extension for Microsoft PowerPoint to the Inclusion list for low file types policy setting in the Attachment Manager.
  • Additionally, in the Default risk level for file attachments policy setting, you set the default risk level to High Risk in the Attachment Manager.
In this scenario, the Inclusion list for low file types policy setting is not applied correctly for PowerPoint file attachments.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the left pane, expand User Configuration, and then expand Administrative Templates.
  3. Expand Windows Components, and then click Attachment Manager.
  4. In the right pane, double-click Default risk level for file attachments.
  5. Click the Setting tab, and then click Enabled.
  6. In the Set the default risk level drop down list, click High Risk.
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  8. Double-click Inclusion list for low file types.
  9. Click the Setting tab, and then click Enabled.
  10. Type PowerPoint.Show.8 in the Specify low risk extensions box.
  11. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  12. Restart the computer.

The user interface (UI) in the Inclusion list for low file types policy setting states that you must include a leading period before the file name extension. However, you must specify the programmatic identifier (ProgId) or the class identifier (CLSID) instead of the file name extension for the Inclusion list for low file types policy setting to be applied correctly. The PowerPoint identifiers are as follows:
  • The ProgId is PowerPoint.Show.8.
  • The CLSID is 91493441-5A91-11CF-8700-00AA0060263B.
