MSDSS cannot reverse-synchronize users in Windows Server 2003 (918763)

SYMPTOMSOn a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services (MSDSS) cannot reverse-synchronize users by using the MSDSS tool. When this problem occurs, you may receive the following error message: Windows cannot run the initial reverse synchronization or migration session. An extended error has occurred. Additionally, the MSDSS log file contains the following entry: Error code (0x800704b8): An extended error has occurred (0xfffffd77) CAUSEThis problem occurs because of a problem in the Adsnwnds.dll file. The Adsnwnds.dll file allocates only a 16 kilobyte (KB) buffer for the Novell bhConfigRW attribute. The contents of this attribute may exceed 16 KB.RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, find the user of the large bhConfigRW attribute in the Novell Directory Services (NDS) tree. To do this, import the users by one group at a time. When you find the user, trim the bhConfigRW attribute in the NDS tree.STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
