Internet Explorer 6 stops responding when you close a Web page that uses the Filter style and the Windows Media Player 9 ActiveX control (918690)

    • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer.
  • You use Internet Explorer 6 to visit a Web page that uses the Filter style and the Windows Media Player 9 ActiveX control.
When you close the Web page, the computer's CPU usage increases to 100 percent. Additionally, Internet Explorer 6 stops responding (hangs).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a bug in the Mshtml.dll file.

RESOLUTION
