FIX: Expected performance benefits may not occur when you process partitions in parallel in SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services on a computer that uses NUMA (918677)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You process partitions in parallel in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services. You process the partitions on a computer that uses non-uniform memory access (NUMA). In this scenario, expected performance benefits may not occur. For example, as you process more partitions in parallel, you may not see an increase in total throughput.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft SQL Server 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services installed on the computer.

Restart information

You must restart the computer if the installer has to replace files that are being used. To avoid restarting the computer, close all the SQL Server Analysis Services tools and clients. Additionally, you have to exit Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) if the server is configured to provide HTTP access. If you have installed Analysis Services as a named instance, you should also stop the SQL Server Browser service because the Msmdredir.dll component of the SQL Server Browser service is updated when you install the hotfix.

Registry information

You do not have to change the registry.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

Hotfix file information

This hotfix contains only those files that are required to correct the issues that this article lists. This hotfix may not contain of all the files that you must have to fully update a product to the latest build.
