A computer that is running Windows XP stops responding when you shut down the computer remotely or programmatically (918449)

SYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario: - You enable the Interactive logon: Do Not require CTRL+ALT+DEL policy setting on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer.
- A screen saver is active on the computer.
- You shut down the computer either remotely or by using a program or script.
In this scenario, the computer stops responding and you may have to move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard to close the screen saver to shut down the computer. Note This behavior may occur even if the computer restarts automatically after you install updates. CAUSEThis behavior occurs because of a problem with the Interactive logon: Do Not require CTRL+ALT+DEL policy setting together with the scenario from the "Symptoms" section.WORKAROUNDTo work around this behavior, use one of the following methods. Method 1: Disable the Interactive logon policy settingTo disable the policy setting, follow these steps:- Click Start, click Run, type Gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
- In the left pane, click Computer Configuration, expand Windows Settings, and then expand Security Settings.
- Expand Local Policies, and then click Security Options.
- In the Policy list that is located in the right pane, double-click Interactive logon: Do Not require CTRL+ALT+DEL.
- Click Disabled, click Apply, and then click OK.
- Click File, and then click Exit
Method 2: Disable the active screen saverTo disable the active screen saver on the computer, follow these steps:- Click Start, click Run, type Desk.cpl , and then click OK.
- In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Screen Saver tab.
- In the Screen saver list, click [None], and then click OK.
