Error message when you open a Word document on a computer that is running Windows XP with Service Pack 2: "Error! The embedded control cannot be loaded" (918014)

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), you open a Microsoft Word document that contains an embedded control. After you do this, the embedded control is not displayed. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
Error! The embedded control cannot be loaded

CAUSE

This problem occurs because there is an issue in the Gdi32.dll file.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
