SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a company in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006, you receive the following error message:
General network error encountered.
Connection to DB has been either turned off or server is not reachable.
Please shut down application and try to log on again.
This problem occurs when you change the computer name or the server name after you create the company.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Small Business Accounting uses the old computer name or the old server name when you try to open the company.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Rebuild the company file by using the Data Tools

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Small Business Accounting, and then click Data Tools.
  2. In the Small Business Accounting Data Tools dialog box, click Rebuild.
  3. In the Rebuild Company File dialog box, select the name of the company file that you want to rebuild.
  4. Click Rebuild.
  5. In the Select company file dialog box, enter a company file name in the File name field, and then click Save.
  6. Click OK.
  7. In the Rebuild Company File dialog box, click Close.
  8. In the Small Business Accounting Data Tools dialog box, click Close.
  9. Restart Microsoft Small Business Accounting.

Method 1 notes

  • You must have administrator access to rebuild the company file.
  • The following is the default location of the company files:

    C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\Small Business Accounting\Companies

Note The UserName placeholder is a placeholder for the actual user name.
  • If you do not keep the company files in the default location, you must save the new file in the location in which you keep the company files.
  • The Data Tools automatically add a number to the company name when you rebuild the company. However, you can delete this number if you want to keep the same company name.

Method 2: Change the computer name manually

  1. Find the company file. The following is the default location of the company files:

    C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\Small Business Accounting\Companies

Note The UserName placeholder is a placeholder for the actual user name.
  2. Right-click the company file, click Open With, and then double-click Notepad.
  3. In Notepad, locate the following line:

    server=ComputerName\MICROSOFTSMLBIZ

Note The ComputerName placeholder is a placeholder for the actual computer name.
  4. Change the computer name.
  5. On the File menu, click Save.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit.
  7. Restart Microsoft Small Business Accounting.
