Error message when you try to deploy the Sybari Enterprise Manager DeploymentAgent program on a computer: "Error: Failed to deploy the Agent. Reason: Class not registered" (917679)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Sybari Enterprise Manager 1.1, when used with:
    • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
    • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you try to deploy the Sybari Enterprise Manager DeploymentAgent program on a computer, you receive the following error message:
Error: Failed to deploy the Agent. Reason: Class not registered -- error creating the DeploymentAgent on server DestinationComputerName using the DomainName\SDEP_DestinationComputerName account credentials.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if a Group Policy object is configured to disable the Microsoft Windows Installer program on the destination computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, temporarily enable the Windows Installer to let you deploy the Sybari Enterprise Manager DeploymentAgent program. To use a local computer policy to enable the Windows Installer, follow these steps:
  1. On the destination computer, click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In the Group Policy Object Editor Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Installer.
  3. In the right pane, double-click Disable Windows Installer.
  4. Click Disabled, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Exit to exit the Group Policy Object Editor MMC snap-in.
  6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
  7. At the Command Prompt window, type gpupdate /force, and then press ENTER.
Note As soon as the Sybari Enterprise Manager DeploymentAgent program has successfully deployed, you may want to restore the Windows Installer Group Policy setting to its original configuration.

Additionally, you can use a domain or organizational unit Group Policy object to configure the Windows Installer Group Policy. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Active Directory Users and Computers tool.
  2. Right-click the domain or organizational unit for which you want to create this policy, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Group Policy tab, and then click New.

    Note You can modify an existing object instead of creating a new Group Policy object. In this situation, go to step 7.
  4. Type a descriptive name for the new object, and then press ENTER.
  5. Click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
  6. If you do not want to apply this policy to a particular user or group, click that user or group in the Group or user names list, and then click to clear the Read check box and the Apply Group Policy check box. Click OK.
  7. Click the Group Policy object that you want to configure, and then click Edit.
  8. In the Group Policy Object Editor window, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Installer.
  9. In the right pane, double-click Disable Windows Installer.
  10. Configure the Disable Windows Installer policy according to your requirements, and then click OK.
  11. On the File menu, click Exit to close the Group Policy Object Editor tool, and then click Close.
