An error is logged when you use the Distribute Software Updates Wizard in the SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for HP ProLiant and Integrity Updates: "Install Failed" (917366)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Systems Manager Server (SMS) 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), you use the Distribute Software Updates Wizard to authorize updates for the Inventory Tool for HP ProLiant and Integrity Updates. However, the SMS client reports a failure to install the update, even though the update operation was actually successful.

Additionally, the following entry is logged in the PatchInstall.log file:
INSTALL FAILED: UpdateID = UniqueUpdateID, QNumber = ArticleID, Title = Update Title, ExitCode = Exit Code, Executable = update installation command line

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Distribute Software Updates Wizard inserts the wrong return code data for the update in the PatchAuthorize.xml file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article:
