256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Groove Workspace after you install Groove and then restart Microsoft Windows, you receive the following error message:
A previous installation/uninstallation of Groove required a restart of the system, but the restart has not yet been done. Please restart and run again.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the computer may be configured so that the GrooveRebootRequest registry value cannot be deleted by the first user who logs on to Windows after Groove is installed.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, restart Windows. Then, log on as a Windows administrator. If that does not resolve the issue, an administrator must manually delete the GrooveRebootRequest registry value. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

  3. Right-click GrooveRebootRequest, and then click Delete.
  4. Exit Registry Editor, and then start Groove.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Groove, the GrooveRebootRequest registry value is created under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce subkey. Typically, this value is deleted when you restart Windows. You must restart Windows to delete the value. The value is not deleted if you log off and then log on to Windows.
