SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), connections are slower, and you cannot browse the local network directory for contacts in Groove Workspace or in Groove Virtual Office.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Windows XP SP2 adds the Windows Firewall feature. This feature can affect Groove and any other application that accepts incoming connections. By default, applications cannot accept connections after you install the service pack. Some software can be harmful to your computer. Windows Firewall enables only software that is from publishers that you trust to accept online connections.

MORE INFORMATION

When Groove runs for the first time after Windows XP SP2 is installed, you receive the following Internet Connection Firewall dialog box: For some features to work properly, the following program must accept connections from the Internet or network. If you have problems using this program, click Configure, and then select the check box for this program. Name: Groove Publisher: Groove Networks, Inc.
  • If you click Close, Groove will be unable to receive incoming peer-to-peer connections. Additionally, you will be unable to see any Groove contacts when you browse the local network directory. Groove communications will still function. However, because all data must move through the Groove relay servers, communications may be noticeably slower. This is especially true for other local users.
  • If you click Configure, a dialog box appears. This dialog box includes Groove in a list of applications and services that can be added to the exceptions list for Windows Firewall. To make an exception for Groove, click to select Groove, and then click OK.

Note You must have the correct system permissions to make this change.
