The Configure Server Extensions command is missing when you try to enable FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions or FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions on a Web site (916869)

The information in this article applies to:

  • FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions from Microsoft
  • FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions from Microsoft

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You run the IIS Lockdown Tool and the URLScan tool on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0. Additionally, the computer is running either FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions from Microsoft or FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions from Microsoft. After you run the IIS Lockdown Tool and the URLScan tool, you use Internet Services Manager to create a new Web site. However, when you try to enable Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions on the Web site, you experience the following symptoms:
  • If you right-click the Web site, and then point to All Tasks, the Configure Server Extensions command is missing from the submenu. Only the Permissions Wizard command appears in the submenu. Therefore, you cannot enable FrontPage Server Extensions for the Web site.
  • If you view the properties of the Web site, the Server Extensions tab is missing from the VirtualServerName Properties dialog box.
You do not experience these symptoms on existing Web sites that you created before you ran the IIS Lockdown Tool and the URLScan tool.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The IIS Lockdown Tool removed the Administration Web site from IIS 5.0.
  • The new Web site that you created uses the Web site instance that is reserved for the Administration Web site. The Administration Web site typically uses Web site instance 2.
FrontPage Server Extensions cannot be enabled on the Administration Web site. Therefore, if a Web site uses the Web site instance that is typically used for the Administration Web site, you cannot enable FrontPage Server Extensions on that Web site.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, create a new Web site, and then enable FrontPage Server Extensions on the Web site. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Create a new Web site. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Internet Service Manager.
    2. Right-click ServerName, point to New, and then click Web site.
    3. Follow the instructions that appear in the Web Site Creation Wizard to create the Web site.
  2. Enable FrontPage Server Extensions on the Web site. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Right-click the Web site, point to All Tasks, and then click Configure Server Extensions.
    2. Follow the instructions that appear in the Server Extensions Configuration Wizard to enable FrontPage Server Extensions on the Web site.
