Error message when you try to install an operating system in Virtual PC for Mac Version 7: "OS not found" (916848)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install an operating system in Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 7, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
OS not found Install an OS on this hard drive

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the edition of Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 that you are installing does not include an operating system.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Import an operating system from an earlier version of Virtual PC for Mac

To resolve this issue, import an operating system that was purchased as a bundle with an earlier version of Virtual PC for Mac, such as Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 6.1.

To import an operating system from Virtual PC for Mac Version 6.1, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Virtual PC for Mac 6.1 installation CD.

    Note The Virtual PC for Mac Version 6.1 installation CD must contain a bundled operating system.
  2. Double-click Virtual PC 6, and then double-click Extras.
  3. Drag the .zip file for the operating system from the Extras folder to your desktop.

    For example, if the bundled operating system is Microsoft Windows XP, drag the Windows XP Professional.zip file to your desktop.
  4. Close all Virtual PC for Mac 6.1 windows.
  5. Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click Virtual PC 6. Then, click Eject"Virtual PC 6".
  6. Double-click the .zip file that you moved to your desktop in step 3. This action creates a .vhd file on your desktop.
  7. Start Virtual PC for Mac 7.
  8. In the Virtual PC List dialog box, click New.
  9. In the Select a Setup Method dialog box, click Import from a previous version, and then click Begin.
  10. Click the .vhd file that you created in step 6, and then click Import.
  11. Click Continue to confirm that you want to import the operating system, and then click Convert.
  12. Install Virtual Machine Additions. To do this, click Install or Update Additions on the PC menu.
  13. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation.

Method 2: Purchase a full version of Microsoft Windows

To resolve this issue, purchase a full version of Microsoft Windows XP Professional, of Microsoft Windows XP Home, or of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Professional to use when you create a virtual machine in Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.

Method 3: Purchase an edition of Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 that includes an operating system

To resolve this issue, purchase any one of the following editions of Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 7:
  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 with Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 with Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 with Windows 2000 Professional
