Error message when you try to start a Windows XP-based virtual machine in Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1: "OS not found" (916843)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start a Microsoft Windows XP-based virtual machine in Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
OS not found.
Install an OS on this hard drive.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you have not installed an operating system on the virtual hard disk.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Windows XP installation CD into the CD or DVD drive.
  2. In the Virtual PC List window, click the virtual machine on which you want to install the operating system, and then click Start Up.
  3. When you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, click Restart on the Control menu, and then click Restart.
  4. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key on the keyboard.
  5. Follow the directions to install the operating system on the virtual hard disk
