You cannot start a virtual machine in Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 (916753)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

Step 1: Install a fresh copy of the operating system

To install a fresh copy of the operating system that you purchased with Virtual PC for Mac Version 7, follow these steps:

1. Insert Virtual PC for Mac Disc 1 into the CD or DVD drive. If you have to, close the Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 installation window.
2. Start Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.
3. In the Virtual PC List window, click New.
4. In the Select a Setup Method window, click Install from Virtual PC for Mac CD, and then click Begin.
5. On the Welcome screen, verify the version of Microsoft Windows that you will install, and then click Continue.
6. On the Install Windows screen, type a name for the virtual machine in the Name box, and then click Install.
   
   Note Type a virtual machine name that differs from the existing virtual machine.
7. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
8. After the installation is complete, and Windows is running, install the virtual machine additions. To do this, click PC, and then click Install or Update Additions.

Step 2: Recover the data from the original virtual machine

To recover the data from the original virtual machine, follow these steps:

1. In Virtual PC for Mac Version 7, verify that all virtual machines are not running. Then, exit Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.
2. On the Go menu, click Home.
3. Double-click Documents, and then double-click Virtual PC List.
4. Press and hold CTRL, click the original virtual machine, and then click Show Package Contents.
5. Press and hold CTRL, click the filename.vhdp file, and then click Copy "filename.vhdp".
   
   Note The filename.vhdp file is the Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, or base file for the original virtual machine.
6. Close all windows that are open on the desktop.
7. On the desktop, press and hold CTRL, click, and then click Paste Item.
8. Start Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.
9. Click the virtual machine that you created in step 1, and then click Settings.
10. Click Drive 2, click Select, click the file that you pasted on the desktop in step 2g, click Choose, and then click OK.
11. In the Virtual PC List window, click the virtual machine that you created in step 1, and then click Start Up.
12. On the Windows desktop, double-click My Computer.
13. In the My Computer window, double-click Local Disk (E:).
    
    Note The drive letter for the local disk may be different, depending on the configuration of the virtual machine.
14. Copy the data from the Local Disk (E:) virtual hard disk to the Local Disk (C:) virtual hard disk. Alternatively, you can access the data directly from the Local Disk (E:) virtual hard disk.
