FIX: All the applications that use the C run-time library may not start after you install Visual Studio 2005 and then you uninstall Visual Studio 2005 without restarting the computer (916632)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You install Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, and then you uninstall Visual Studio 2005. Without restarting the computer, you install Visual Studio 2005 again, and then you uninstall Visual Studio 2005 again. In this scenario, all the applications that use the C run-time library may not start.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\ PendingFileRenameOperations registry subkey is configured to delete the Msvcr80.dll library. This registry subkey is configured when you uninstall Visual Studio 2005. The Msvcr80.dll library is located in the %windir%\WinSXS folder. The Msvcr80.dll library is deleted when you restart the computer.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.
