Error message when you connect the receiver for a Wireless Optical Mouse Blue device to a Windows Millennium Edition-based computer: "The file mouhid.vxd was not found" (916466)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect the receiver for a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse Blue device to a Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The file mouhid.vxd was not found.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Mouhid.vxd file is missing or has been corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  2. On the Startup tab, click to clear the *StateMgr check box, and then click OK.
  3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
  4. When the computer starts, click OK in the Selective startup window.
  5. On the General tab, click Extract File.
  6. Type C:\Windows\system\mouhid.vxd, and then click Start.
  7. In the Restore from box, type c:\windows\options\cabs, and then click OK.
  8. Follow the prompts to back up the files that you removed.
  9. On the General tab, click Normal startup.
  10. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
