Xbox 360: You cannot install Media Center Extender for Xbox 360 (916180)

SYMPTOMS

You cannot install the Media Center Extender for Xbox 360. To download the XboxXPSP2-ENU.exe application, visit the following Web site:

http://www.xbox.com/pcsetup/

The downloaded package is unpacked but the application Setup program does not start.

You may experience a spike in the CPU usage and a process called DVCSetup.exe is using a high percentage of the CPU.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because a required registry key is not set correctly. You must manually correct the registry key.

THINGS TO TRY

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Verify the required entry is located in the Windows Registry. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit.exe, and then click OK.
    2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\CONTROL\CLASS\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    3. In the right pane, look for UpperFilters, and then make sure that the Data value is set to PartMgr.
    4. If this entry does not exist, exit Registry Editor, and then go to step 2. If the entry does exist, just exit Registry Editor.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then click OK.
    1. At the Command Prompt, type the following text all on one line:

      reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\CLASS\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} /v UPPERFILTERS /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d PartMgr /f

      You receive the following message in the Command Prompt window, to indicate that this command was accepted:The Operation Completed successfully
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. After the computer restarts, you can run the Media Center Extender for Xbox 360 application.
