The Information Store service may crash when a user performs a search query from an IMAP4 client in Exchange Server 2003 (915953)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. A user connects to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 mailbox by using the IMAP4 protocol. That user performs a search query from the IMAP4 client. In this scenario, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may crash.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the information store tries to compute server context-specific information that is not already in the server context object. In this situation, Exchange tries to read from a zero-length memory allocation. This behavior causes the Information Store service to crash.
