Error message when you use MMC 3.0: "MMC has detected error in a snap-in" (915797)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you try to expand the Scripts (Startup/Shutdown) node in the Group Policy Object Editor tool, you may receive the following error message:
MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC
This error message contains the following options:
Report this error to Microsoft and then shut down MMC
Continue running and ignore errors with this snap-in for the rest of the session
Continue running and always ignore errors with this snap-in, regardless of user or session

CAUSE

This problem may occur when Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0 is installed on the computer. MMC 3.0 has a new feature that tracks memory-related errors in snap-ins. Therefore, MMC 3.0 detects a memory-related error in the Group Policy Object Editor tool that had been previously undetected.

Because the error described in the symptoms section does not affect any functionality, the error was not detected in earlier versions of MMC.
