Default performance objects may be missing when you use System Monitor on a Windows XP Service Pack 1-based computer (915728)

SYMPTOMS

When you use System Monitor on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer, the default performance objects, Memory and Performance, may be missing from the System Monitor user interface.

CAUSE

This issue may occur because a restriction has been placed on the registry settings for the performance objects. This restriction may have been set by the system administrator. The system administrator may have created a policy or a program that modified the registry settings at the time of installation.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Install the latest Windows XP service pack on the computer.

  2. Modify the registry settings for the performance objects. To do this, follow these steps.

    Note If the system administrator has restricted the registry settings by using a policy, you may not have permissions to modify the registry settings. Or, the registry settings may revert back to the default policy settings when you restart the computer. If this behavior occurs, contact the system administrator.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PerfOS\Performance

    3. Locate and then double-click Disable Performance Counters.
    4. In the Value data box, type 0 if the current value is set to 1, and then click OK.
    5. Exit Registry Editor.
