INTRODUCTION

This article describes what occurs when you download a file that exceeds the folder size restriction in the Files tool in Groove Virtual Office or in Groove Workspace.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use the Files tool, you can set folder properties to specify when to download new files or changes that you made to the files in that folder. By default, the Files tool automatically downloads new files or changes that you made to files as soon as they are available. However, a member of the shared workspace may use Groove over a slow Internet connection or on a device that has limited storage space. In this situation, you may want to set download properties for one or more folders so that large files or large changes do not dominate bandwidth usage and compromise performance. This functionality was added to the Files tool for version 2.5 workspaces.

Note The version of the workspace is independent of the version of Groove. For more information about how to view workspace properties, visit the following Groove Networks Web site:To use this functionality in Groove Workspace 2.5, a workspace manager must configure a file-size limit in the Files tool download properties. This limit applies to all members. In Groove Virtual Office 3, this limit can be set by each member. Additionally, the limit does not apply to other members of the workspace. When a member tries to fetch an oversized file, the following sequence occurs between the Groove installations:
  1. The requester sends a request for the desired file. The requester must be online to do this. If the requester is not online, the request will time-out without finding a valid sender.
  2. A potential sender replies to offer to send the file. The sender can be the Groove installation of any workspace member who has already received the file.
  3. The requester sends an acceptance message to a sender.

Note The requester and the sender must be online for steps 2 and 3.
  4. The sender transmits the file.
Note As soon as the sender has been established, the requester can go offline. Then, the sender sends the file contents to the relay server. The sender must be online throughout the delivery of the file to send it successfully to the requester or to the requester's relay server. If the sender goes offline during file delivery, the delivery will fail. Additionally, the requester must establish a new potential sender.
