SYMPTOMS

You are running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 in a multiserver environment. You change the service account for the SQL Server Agent service on the target server (the TSX server). After you do this, you can no longer enlist the TSX server into the master server (the MSX server).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the changed security credentials of the SQL Server Agent service on the TSX server do not match the cached security credentials. The change is not reflected in the cached security credentials.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, restart the instance of SQL Server 2005 on the TSX server. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  2. In SQL Server Configuration Manager, click SQL Server 2005 Services.
  3. In the details pane, right-click SQL Server (MSSQLServer) or the named instance of SQL Server 2005, and then click Restart.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
