A Windows XP computer is slow to start after you deploy a Windows XP operating system image to the computer (915163)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

After you deploy a Microsoft Windows XP operating system image to a computer, the computer is slow to start. It can take as long as 10 minutes before the logon screen appears.

CAUSE

A corrupted file in the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder causes this issue.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, delete the contents of the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

If this issue occurs every time that you deploy the Windows XP operating system image, the image itself contains a corrupted file in the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.

To prevent this issue in future deployments, delete the contents of the Prefetch folder, and then create a new deployment image.

Alternatively, some imaging software can remove files from inside deployment images. If your imaging software has this capability, you can remove the contents of the Prefetch folder from the deployment image.
